Chokwe Mwana Pwo Angola / Congo Headdress

African masks serve an important role in rituals and ceremonies and usually have a spiritual and religious meaning. They are also used to intimidate rival tribes and it is thought that wearing the mask turns the tribe leader 'invincible'

It is often believed that the wearer of the mask is able to communicate with the being symbolized on the mask, or is possessed by who the mask represents.

Traditionally, the wearing of masks requires a ceremony in which the wearer goes into a deep trance and “communicates” with his ancestors. The ceremony involves song and dance, as well as a “translator” for the dead, which makes this ritual a communal experience.

All the remains I sell are over 100 years old for the law, ethically sourced and respect of the living friends and relatives, I would never sell any remains with a known name as this may upset the living and that is in my opinion disrespectful. If someone is disrespected with no link to a random skull then that is their opinion and in my mind not disrespectful.
