African Oath Taking Ritual Human Skull

Regular price £3,950.00

A powerful indigenous judicial artifact consisting of a preserved human skull set to a heavy braided fibre base.  This pieces retains structurally visible teeth and encrustations from ritual application.  This piece functioned as traditional Oath taking object used in the resolution of criminal matters, property boundary lines and land disputes prior to modern civil policing.  During the proceedings, the piece was placed on the head of the oath taker; local spiritual belief held that breaking the oath would result in severe physical swelling and divine retribution.  This is a rare example of pre-colonial West African custom law heritage.
