This is a rare, matching trio of preserved human skulls individually bound within intricate, hand woven fibre and rope netting harnesses. The three artifacts are suspended together from a single horizontal support rod via a thick twisted cordage. Each piece displays distinct anatomical features, heavy organic wear and natural aging of the organic fibre wrapping. Originating from the cross river region of Nigeria and Cameroon, these suspended skull harnesses held multiple roles within traditions of the Ekoi such as lineage guardians serving as a direct spiritual channel to consult and honour revered forebears. This could have also been used in secret society sanctuaries maintained inside the restricted meeting houses of male secret societies to signify power, enforce judicial authority and act as a spiritual boundary marker.
