This is a shrine piece. From the Ejham tribe. It belonged to a family shrine, it is the skull of a family member who died of a terrible disease because he was an irresponsible.
They say when people die in such manner, their heads are removed before burial to prevent the punishment from spreading to another family member. That skull is called "Mbiam".
Purchased from a collector of African arts, originally he bought it direct from the tribe on his travels in the late 20th century.
