A real human skull on a shield made of animal hide.
Known as a “Afutambo” Purchased from the Mbembe tribe, it would’ve been a royal shield used by the head of the clan. This would’ve been brought out for one of two occasions, either for large cultural ceremonies with other clans or to signify a communal war.
Purchased from a collector of African arts, originally he bought it direct from the tribe on his travels in the late 20th century.
